Sea Palling Waxham and
District Women’s Institute was first established in March
1968. Sea Palling W.I. was in fact started
in 1928, convening in the village hall as now,
put on hold during the war years, as were most W.I.s. It
also incorporates the village of Horsey whose institute was
established by Mrs. Anthony Buxton of Horsey Hall also
during the 30’s. The meetings in Horsey then convened in the
Village Hall (A small tin hut in the triangle), the Street
Horsey. Since Horsey’s meeting place was demolished the W.I
.of Horsey then became part of Sea Palling and Waxham. The
current lady of Horsey Hall, Mrs. Bridget Buxton is our
current president and has been for several years. Our
current membership consists of 10 Sea Palling members,
Horsey 6, Waxham 1, and Ludham 1; and a lady from West
Somerton who is a dual
member
Our meetings are the
first Tuesday every month and are open to ladies who we
hope will join, but you can just come and give us a try, (we
occasionally have men in our audience). Members pay a yearly
subscription of £27 and receive the W.I. magazine eight
times a year, keeping you informed of the country’s other
institutes and the committee’s current ventures and
commitments. Sea Palling Waxham & District are a small
group of 19 members, we are very friendly, and we’re not
quite like Jam and Jerusalem but sometimes, well maybe, you
have to laugh!. Our youngest member is 28 and the oldest
well, it would ’t be right to disclose. We have fun, learn,
make friends, do good works, and quite often hide our lights
under a bushel.
Our Presidents
tablecloth, (featured at the top of the page) was made by
our members. In December 1979 we held a competition and the
one produced came from a combination of two designs. The
embroidery is roughly a representation of the four seasons.
This was compiled and ready for presentation at the March
Birthday meeting 1980. September 2006 we had another
competition with each member having to embroider their name
on a piece of cloth to be attached to another tablecloth,
thus being a visible. reminder of members past and present.
The competition, won by Monica Green was not only her name
but a beautiful picture, all hand embroidered, (and Monica
is one of our older members), and having been a member for a
good many years

July we
had a very interesting talk from Eric Edwards M.B.E., on life as a Marshman.
With his collection of bygone tools we had an insight into his working life.
Might have been thought of as a male subject but we all had an enjoyable
evening.
In June
we had our garden meeting, and this year we went to Baconsthorpe Old Rectory,
the home of Tessa MacCosh. A wonderful warm evening, finished off with tea and
cakes. Most of us came away with plants, some which had been left over from a
plant swap sale. Look out for the sale next year, proceeds go to charity. Most
of us also took the opportunity to look around the lovely church
In May we had our resolutions
meeting, S.O.S. for Honey Bees. All members were in favour of the motion which
will now be debated at the Annual General Meeting in June.
We then had a very informative talk on eating disorders, once again I think we
all realized that we didn’t know as much as we thought and it’s very
surprising how many people are troubled by it. Mrs. C. is one of the
volunteers on the end of a help line at BEAT, (Beating eating disorders).
There are people out there who can help, if know someone who needs to talk,
this is their contact number, Helpline; 0845 634 1414, Youthline; 0845 634
7650 , website;
www.b-eat.co.uk , or you may like to be one of the helpers yourself, make
a difference, these troubles are quite often closer than you think!
In April we welcomed Mr. Peter
Ransome with tales of Old Shuck------The East Anglian Devil Dog. Once again an
excellent talk by a well versed speaker. Now you have to think, the stories in
the news at the moment, are they sightings of a panther, OR IS IT OLD SHUCK ?
March, our
41st Birthday meeting was again a great success
with us catering for 44. We went round the Mediterranean
with Chris Durdin, familiar to some
of our guests as he has been involved with several TV.
Programmes. A very interesting and enjoyable evening and quite late for some of
us, quite a few guests booking their places for next
year
February our members
enjoyed a little cheese & wine taste testing and family
history courtesy of Mr. Tom Thrower of
Ludham.
January 2009,we were down to 17
for our annual meal as a few members were ill, but the rest
of us had a good time. Malcolm Weston and his team again
cooked and served a wonderful meal, in our meeting place,
the village hall. The “Swans” on the menu were a
delight.
December we had our AGM where
Our Treasurer Mrs. Ruth Galey resigned after 30 years,
thanking her for her very long session, although she will
still remain on the committee, we presented her with an
engraved glass Vase with a picture of her spaniel on the
front. Mrs. Diane Miller takes over as treasurer, the rest
of the committee stays the same, other than Mrs. Tijou who
also resigned.
We did however welcome two new
members and a third joins in
February.
November saw our group going
crafty again with Mrs. Pat Weston and her sister in law.
This time we were learning the art ofQuilling. We all went
home having successfully produced a Christmas card and had a
good chat and laugh doing it.
October we were off to school in
Tanzaniawith Mrs. Pat Stevenson from
Save The Children Fund. Our President, Mrs. Bridget Buxton
was away but the rest of us learnt that it was in fact our
President’s Great Grandmother who had started the Save The
Children Fund .
After our August break, September saw
us in the creative hands of Mrs Dwyer, with Jewellery and
Creative Textiles, proving nearly everything we might throw
away has a use. Even a choclate wrapper and a crime Suit can
be put to good use in her hands.
A perfect example to the W.I.'s national campaign of cutting
down waste.
July, we were all calm and collected
trying the gentle art of Tai-Chi with Master M/s Lee. We
were joined by guests to make 22, proving to be a very
popular evening.
