HISTORY OF INSTITUTE
Sea Palling Waxham and District Women’s Institute was first established in
March 1968. Sea Palling W.I. was in fact started in 1928, convening in the village hall as now, put
on hold during the war years, as were most W.I.s. It also incorporates the village of Horsey whose institute was
established by Mrs. Anthony Buxton of Horsey Hall also during the 30’s. The meetings in Horsey then convened in
the Village Hall (A small tin hut in the triangle), the Street Horsey. Since Horsey’s meeting place was
demolished the W.I .of Horsey then became part of Sea Palling and Waxham. The current lady of Horsey Hall, Mrs.
Bridget Buxton is our current president and has been for several years. Our current membership consists of 10
Sea Palling members, Horsey 6, Waxham 1, and Ludham 1; and a lady from West Somerton who is a dual
member
Our meetings are the first Tuesday every month and are open to ladies
who we hope will join, but you can just come and give us a try, (we occasionally have men in our audience).
Members pay a yearly subscription of £27 and receive the W.I. magazine eight times a year, keeping you informed
of the country’s other institutes and the committee’s current ventures and commitments. Sea Palling Waxham &
District are a small group of 19 members, we are very friendly, and we’re not quite like Jam and Jerusalem but
sometimes, well maybe, you have to laugh!. Our youngest member is 28 and the oldest well, it would ’t be right
to disclose. We have fun, learn, make friends, do good works, and quite often hide our lights under a
bushel.
Our Presidents tablecloth, (featured at the top of the page) was made by
our members. In December 1979 we held a competition and the one produced came from a combination of two designs.
The embroidery is roughly a representation of the four seasons. This was compiled and ready for presentation at
the March Birthday meeting 1980. September 2006 we had another competition with each member having to embroider
their name on a piece of cloth to be attached to another tablecloth, thus being a visible. reminder of members
past and present. The competition, won by Monica Green was not only her name but a beautiful picture, all hand
embroidered, (and Monica is one of our older members), and having been a member for a good many
years

RECENT MEETINGS
2010
No Meeting in August
In July we travelled
around India, Girl-Guiding with pauline Butterworth. She brought with her, many souvenirs and several sari.
dressed for the part, it was a colourful evening.
In June we visited
Great Yarmouth Potteries, which was a great success. An extremely interesting place, and Ernie Child a very
talented man. We finished our evening with a Fish 'n' Chip supper.
In May we had our
Resolutions Meeting. Food Labelling was approved by all Members present.
Some members then tried a little line-dancing, while the rest did a Scrambled Egg
Quiz
In April we had past
member,Wendy Hughes on flower arranging. Who would have thought flower arranging would be such a laugh and have
us in stitches.
In March it was
our 42nd Birthday meeting. A very successful meeting where we catered for 48. Jackie Simpson gave us an
informative talk on The Prince's Trust. Several visiting WIs have already booked their places for next
year.
In February
Deborah Preston gave us 'More Tales From The Housemaid's Cupboard'.
January; once
again Malcolm Weston cooked us an excellent meal.
December: We finished the year with a successful A.G.M., Pudding Tasting, and
Quiz.
In
November, Rebecca Parsley gave a talk on REFLEXOLOGY, with a demonstration on our member Jackie, who hearly fell
asleep as she was given a foot massage. Apparently this is quite usual, for her clients to either fall asleep,
or talk constantly.
rebecca was such a "hit" with our members, we're hoping to have her back again with a different
treatment.
In
October, David Bolton gave us "IMAGES OF NORFOLK", with his wonderful photography slide show, to music. It
certainly made us want to get out there with our own cameras, in the hope of getting some wonderful shots
too.
In
September we had an insight into the world of television quiz shows, such as Weakest Link and 15 to 1, when we
heard "The Confessions of a Quiz Queen" by Merrie Longbottom; a humorous account of her time on these Shows - a
clever lady! We finished with her giving us a "Simple Quiz", with our President coming first with 9 out of
10.
